After arriving back on the farm on April 24, we started in on the projects. John’s brother, Sam, was here, too and sister Jane showed up often.
John and Sam started work on tearing down an old building near the driveway while I cleaned out Dad’s car and got it ready to put up for sale. It was a tough old building…
Next up was re-shingling the house. Unfortunately, the couple of layers of old shingles had to come off first. Bro-in-law Tony helped with this project, as did our nephews, Jeremy & Alex. Good thing, too, ‘cause the older guys looked pretty rough after a day up on the roof!
Looks pretty good, doesn’t it?
The rest of the month was spent sorting through things in the house and deciding what to do with them. We also took the motorhome over to Cedar Falls for about 5 days so the slide seal could get fixed again. We had had the seal replaced last summer, but while we were in Coffeyville last fall, we found that it still leaked during rainstorms. We don’t have a lot of faith in this company, but are hoping that they can fix it this time.
Toward the end of the month, we worked on getting the kitchen in the house cleaned out and enjoyed visiting with friends. John and I also spent a couple days going around to area cemeteries to photograph gravestones for the family genealogy that I’ve been working on for several years now.
Today is Memorial Day, May 28, 2012 and we attended the program at the local cemetery. Nicely done and it brought back many memories of when I marched in the band and later, when John participated in the American Legion color guard. Lots of history in this area for us both…
May 29: time to hit the road again to find those great western skies!
